The Golden Spikes 11U Crimson Tide closed out their season in a way that says a lot about who this team has become.
Playing up in the 12U division at the NCS Memorial Day Tournament, the Crimson Tide had every reason to let Saturday define the weekend. They opened pool play with two losses, landed as the 11th seed, and had to face a long road on Sunday just to stay alive.
Instead, they battled.
By the end of Sunday, Golden Spikes had fought through bracket play, picked up two big wins against 12U opponents, and finished the tournament as Silver Championship Finalists. It was not the easiest path, but it was the kind of weekend that shows growth, toughness, and the ability to respond when things do not start your way.
For an 11U travel baseball team out of Loomis, California, competing up against 12U teams in the Sacramento and Placer County youth baseball scene, this was a strong final chapter to their 11U season.
Saturday Starts with a Tough Test
The weekend opened against Laguna 12U Purple All-Stars at Skip & Julie Davies Sports Park, and for most of the game, the Crimson Tide stayed within reach.
Laguna scored one run in the first, but Golden Spikes kept the game close behind a strong start from Hunter F. Hunter worked through four innings, striking out four and giving his team a chance to stay in it. Defensively, the Crimson Tide played clean baseball and did not commit a single error, with Luke B handling the most chances in the field.
The difference came late. Laguna put together a seven-run fifth inning, using extra-base hits to break open what had been a much tighter game. Golden Spikes collected hits from Charlie W, Kyle T, and Willie R, but could not get the big inning it needed, falling 8–0.
The second pool play game brought another strong 12U opponent in Mustangs Navy 12U. Mustangs Navy jumped ahead early and continued to add pressure through the middle innings. Caden C started on the mound for Golden Spikes, and Luke B and Caden each collected hits offensively, but the Crimson Tide could not keep pace in an 8–0 loss.
At the end of Saturday, Golden Spikes sat at 0–2 and held the 11th seed.
Not exactly the start they wanted.
But tournament baseball gives teams a chance to rewrite the weekend if they are willing to fight for it.
Sunday Begins with a Statement Win
Sunday opened against Aggies Cooperstown 12U, and the Crimson Tide looked like a team ready to reset.
After two quiet offensive games on Saturday, Golden Spikes broke through in the third inning. Luke B singled in a run, two more scored on an error, Charlie W doubled in two, and Austin T added an RBI single. In one inning, the Crimson Tide grabbed control and built a lead that would prove to be just enough.
Golden Spikes eventually stretched the lead to seven runs, but Aggies Cooperstown made a late push, scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth. That is where the Crimson Tide had to hold steady.
Luke B gave Golden Spikes a gutsy outing on the mound, throwing 5 1/3 innings, striking out six, and keeping the game within reach even as Aggies pushed back late. Willie R came in from the bullpen to help close it down, and the Crimson Tide held on for a 9–7 win.
The offense looked completely different from Saturday. Golden Spikes finished with 10 hits, including two-hit games from Luke and Austin. Willie drove in three runs, while the team also showed patience at the plate with seven walks. Defensively, the Crimson Tide once again played clean baseball with zero errors.
It was the kind of win that changes a team’s entire day.
One More Comeback to Reach the Final
The next matchup against Lakers 12U Spring & Cooperstown became another test of composure.
Golden Spikes scored three runs in the first inning, taking advantage of a Caden C walk and defensive mistakes from the Lakers. But the game tightened quickly. Lakers tied it in the third, then took the lead in the fourth.
The Crimson Tide needed another response, and they got it.
In the top of the fifth, Charlie W singled down the left field line to tie the game at five. Then, in the sixth, Golden Spikes put together the inning that sent them to the Silver Championship game.
The Crimson Tide scored five runs on six hits, with Colin F delivering the biggest swing of the game: a three-run double that broke things open. By the time the inning ended, Golden Spikes had flipped the game and taken a 10–5 lead.
Kyle T started on the mound and gave the Crimson Tide three solid innings, while Kevin K came in from the bullpen to help finish the game. Offensively, Willie R and Caden each collected two hits, while Colin and Charlie each drove in three runs. Golden Spikes also drew eight walks and stole six bases, with Luke and Caden each swiping multiple bags.
After starting the tournament as the 11th seed, the Crimson Tide had now won two straight elimination games against 12U teams.
They had earned their place in the Silver Championship final.
A Final Test Against Six Rivers Kings
The Silver Championship game brought a strong opponent in Six Rivers Kings 12U, and the Crimson Tide ran into a team that came out swinging early.
Six Rivers scored three runs in the first and continued to add pressure throughout the game. Willie R started on the mound for Golden Spikes and struck out four in 1 2/3 innings, but the Kings kept finding ways to extend innings and create offense.
Golden Spikes collected hits from Luke B, Kyle T, Austin T, and Willie, with Caden C driving in the Crimson Tide’s lone run. But after a long day of battling through the bracket, Golden Spikes could not generate enough offense to slow down Six Rivers, falling 12–1.
It was not the ending the Crimson Tide wanted, but the bigger story was the road they took to get there.
This team entered Sunday as the 11th seed after two losses. They were playing up in a 12U division. They had to win multiple games just to reach the final.
And they did.
A Season Ending Built on Growth
The Golden Spikes 11U Crimson Tide finished the NCS Memorial Day Tournament as Silver Championship Finalists, but the placement only tells part of the story.
The real story is what happened after Saturday.
A young 11U team playing up against 12U competition could have let the pool play losses define the weekend. Instead, the Crimson Tide came back Sunday with more energy, better at-bats, cleaner execution, and the confidence to win back-to-back bracket games.
They beat Aggies Cooperstown 12U 9–7.
They beat Lakers 12U Spring & Cooperstown 10–5.
They earned their way into the Silver Championship game.
That is the kind of weekend that matters for long-term player development.
