The Gold Behind the Spikes
Golden Spikes Baseball Academy was founded in 2010 by former professional catcher Bret Hemphill and pitching coach Alex Creel. What began as a shared vision between two lifelong baseball men has grown into one of Northern California’s most trusted development programs. From the very beginning, Golden Spikes has been about more than teaching skills—it has been about cultivating athletes who are, in every sense, home grown. Players who develop their abilities here, compete here, and learn the values of discipline, respect, and perseverance that last well beyond the field.
Bret’s career spanned over a decade in professional baseball, including time with the Anaheim Angels organization. A catcher by trade, he experienced the demands of the game at the highest levels, from the grind of the minor leagues to time in the majors. As a co-founder of Golden Spikes, he brings that experience directly to the academy, mentoring players with the insight only a former pro can provide. Alex, once a standout pitching prospect in Northern California, turned to coaching after his own playing career was cut short by injury. Immersing himself in advanced pitching development, he studied under some of the top instructors in the country and has since logged thousands of hours of instruction. His focus on velocity, mechanics, and arm health has helped countless pitchers prepare for success at higher levels of the game.
Together, Hemphill and Creel built the academy on a simple philosophy: elite players are built, not born. With consistent training, thoughtful mentorship, and a supportive but challenging culture, athletes can refine their skills, sharpen their mental game, and grow into complete players. The experience of the coaching staff, the commitment to long-term development, and the culture of accountability have shaped Golden Spikes into an academy that balances competition with character.
Since 2010, Golden Spikes has trained and mentored hundreds of athletes, many of whom have gone on to play at the collegiate and professional levels. Yet beyond stats and scholarships, the true legacy of the academy lies in the confidence, discipline, and sense of community it instills in its players. Golden Spikes Baseball Academy will always remain rooted in its founding vision: to provide a place where athletes can discover their potential and grow into complete players. With Hemphill and Creel leading the way, the academy continues to set the standard for development in Northern California—staying true to its name, and true to being Home Grown.

I can’t say enough about this baseball organization. They are a facility with private lessons, group workouts and hitting lessons, in addition to having a number of travel teams. My son has been with them on there travel team for two seasons and absolutely loves the coaching staff and the facility. He has played baseball for 6 years and the first year he was with the spikes he learned so much and grew as a player! Shout out to Alex for pitching and Brett for hitting without them teaching my son not sure if he would be where he is in ability today! Thanks Golden Spikes!

Coaches are great and to see how the practices are run is just phenomenal to see young athletes manage the baseball field the way they do. I would highly recommend them to anyone ho wants to improve their child’s baseball game.
