Bret Hemphill brings a rare combination of high-level playing experience and elite coaching insight to Golden Spikes Baseball Academy. A switch-hitting catcher, Bret made a memorable debut in the Major Leagues with the Anaheim Angels in 1999—recording hits from both sides of the plate in his first two at-bats, a feat achieved by only a select few in baseball history.
Over his 7.5-year professional career with the Angels organization, Bret became known for his consistency and defensive excellence behind the plate. He was twice named to minor league All-Star teams, won two championships, and earned the distinction of “Best Defensive Catcher” in the organization by Baseball America in both 1995 and 1996. He closed his pro career with a .270 batting average, and a deep understanding of how to play the game at its highest level.
Before reaching the pros, Bret was a standout catcher at Cal State Fullerton, one of the nation’s most storied college baseball programs. Under Hall of Fame Coach Augie Garrido and Coach George Horton, he played in two College World Series (’92 and ’94), was named “Best Defensive Player” of the 1994 team, and earned All-Big West honors and All-Tournament Team recognition in NCAA Regionals.
After hanging up his cleats, Bret shifted his focus to developing the next generation of players. He served five seasons as a coach at Sierra College, coached at Whitney High School, and helped shape talent at Hard90 Baseball before fully committing his time to Golden Spikes.
At Golden Spikes, Bret leads elite-level catching and hitting clinics, and plays an integral role in the development of athletes in the Academy’s competitive travel team program. His coaching goes far beyond technique—he emphasizes the mental side of the game, teaching players how to think, prepare, and compete like professionals.
Bret’s lifelong passion for baseball fuels every session he leads. His athletes don’t just train hard—they train smart. Under his guidance, players build the complete package: baseball IQ, physical skill, and game-day confidence.
