Interested In Travel Baseball?
If you’re considering travel baseball for the first time, you probably have a lot of questions about what it involves, how it works, and whether it’s the right fit for your family. This guide will help you better understand what to expect so you can decide if travel baseball is the right path for your athlete.
What is travel baseball, and how is it different from little league or pony baseball?
Travel baseball is designed for players who want to compete at a higher level than local recreational leagues. Teams practice more often, play against stronger competition, and travel to tournaments both locally and regionally. It’s a step up in commitment, competition, and skill development.
What is the time commitment for a travel baseball team?
Most teams practice 2–3 times per week with weekend tournaments during the season. Tournaments typically last all day Saturday and Sunday, with some events running Saturday-Monday. Families should expect 2-3 weekends per month of tournament play during the season.
How do I join a travel team?
Travel teams have revolving rosters which means we are always accepting applications for new players. We typically carry a roster of 11 – 13 players to each tournament. If there is room on the tournament roster, Golden Spikes Baseball will conduct try-outs. Players will be assessed on talent and ability, coachability, sportsmanship, commitment, availability and if needed, by position. If you are interested in joining a team, please complete the Player Interest form.
How far do teams travel?
Most tournaments are within a 30min–3 hour drive, though some teams may participate in regional or national events that require overnight stays. Golden Spikes teams also attend prestigious tournaments such as the Arizona Spring Championship and Cooperstown in NY for 12U.
What age groups can play travel baseball?
Travel baseball typically begins around 8U and continues through high school. Golden Spikes offers competitive tournament teams for ages 9U to 13U. We do offer clinics and private coaching for ages 8 to collegiate level
When are tryouts held?
Every player is required to tryout every season, as no position is guaranteed. Golden Spikes normally hosts tryout in early June for fall tournament teams and early December for spring tournament teams. Complete a player interest form at anytime to be considered if there is an open spot on a team or when the next tryout registration is open.
What is the tryout process like?
Tryouts usually involve evaluating hitting, pitching, fielding, speed, and overall game awareness. Coaches look not only at talent, but also at attitude, work ethic, and how players respond to coaching. Complete a player interest form at anytime to be considered if there is an open spot on a team or when the next tryout registration is open.
How competitive is travel baseball?
Travel baseball attracts stronger players, so the level of play is noticeably higher than rec ball. Games are faster-paced, pitching is stronger, and players are expected to know game situations. This competitive environment helps athletes grow quickly.
How does travel baseball benefit players long-term?
Players gain advanced training, exposure to tougher competition, and opportunities to grow mentally as well as physically. Many travel baseball players, including our own past home grown students, go on to play at the high school, college, and even professional levels. Just as important, they develop discipline, resilience, and teamwork.
How do I know if my family is ready for travel baseball?
Consider your athlete’s interest level, your family’s availability for practices and tournaments, and your budget for fees and travel. If your player is eager for more baseball and wants to be challenged, travel baseball can be a great investment in both their development and their love of the game.
Are the workouts, clinics, and camps open to the general public?
Yes, Golden Spikes is an open program. Our policy is that you attend the workout for your appropriate age group unless you have otherwise received
approval.
What information do I need to provide if I am selected to play on a travel ball team?
Golden Spikes Baseball requires a fully executed waiver, a signed Commitment Letter as well as a copy of your child’s birth certificate.

Greatest baseball instruction for young boys around!!! They know how to coach and teach kids. You can’t go wrong here.

I can’t say enough about this baseball organization. They are a facility with private lessons, group workouts and hitting lessons, in addition to having a number of travel teams. My son has been with them on there travel team for two seasons and absolutely loves the coaching staff and the facility. He has played baseball for 6 years and the first year he was with the spikes he learned so much and grew as a player! Shout out to Alex for pitching and Brett for hitting without them teaching my son not sure if he would be where he is in ability today! Thanks Golden Spikes!
